Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has stepped down and the Army has taken control following the violence and arrests calling for her resignation. Waker-Uz-Zaman, the Bangladesh Army chief General, told the media that the Army  will establish an interim government and has urged the protesters to return to a peaceful approach.

“I take all responsibility and promise to protect your life and property”

Ms Hasina, who started her fifth term as Prime Minister this year, left state capital Dhaka in a military aircraft for India, confirmed the Army chief and said, “There is a crisis in the country. I have met Opposition leaders and we have decided to form an interim government to run this country. I take all responsibility and promise to protect your life and property. Your demands will be fulfilled. Please support us and stop violence. If you work with us, we can move towards a proper solution. We cannot achieve anything through violence,”

She was accompanied by her younger sister, Sheikh Rehana. Protesters demanding her resignation have stormed Gono Bhaban, the Prime Minister’s official residence, according to local media reports. The Bangladesh Army reportedly gave the Prime Minister a 45-minute ultimatum to step down.

Demonstrators vandalizing the statue of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman

Footage showing protesters vandalizing a statue of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the father of Ms. Hasina and a key figure in Bangladesh’s fight for independence, is being seen on the streets of Dhaka. This marks a significant shift in the country’s political landscape.

Bangabandu, the  legacy of Mujibur Rahman, is no longer a symbol of Bangladesh’s war of liberation. Instead, it represents her daughter’s politics, which   protesters claim has focused on suppressing dissent.

The protest began to replace the system favors supporters of the ruling Awami League and wanted a merit-based system.

The remark by Prime Minister Hasina made the protesters angry. “If not the grandchildren of the freedom fighters, then who will get quota benefits? The grandchildren of the ‘Razakars’? This is my question. I want to ask the people of the nation. If the protesters don’t comply, I can do nothing. They can continue their protest. If protesters damage properties or attack cops, the law will take its course. We can’t help.” PM Hasina said.
