At least 24 people, including an Indonesian national, were burned alive by a mob in Bangladesh at a starred hotel owned by the Awami League party leader, Shahin Chakkladar, after Sheikh Hasina resigned as prime minister and fled the country. The victims, mostly boarders, were set ablaze at the Zabir International Hotel in Joshor district.
Muhammad Yunus has been chosen to lead the interim government in Bangladesh
Muhammad Yunus, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate and economist, was appointed to lead Bangladesh’s interim administration on Tuesday night, a day after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and fled the country following a deadly crackdown on a student-led movement.
Former BNP leader and former prime minister Khaleda Zia has expressed concerns over nationwide violence, vandalism, and looting of state resources amid the student uprising.
Zia’s reaction came after a mob in Bangladesh burned alive at least 24 people, including an Indonesian national, at a starred hotel owned by Awami League party leader Shahin Chakkladar, after Sheikh Hasina resigned as prime minister and departed the country. The deceased, largely boarders, were set on fire at the Zabir International Hotel in Joshor area.
Hindu homes and temples being targeted
Since Sheikh Hasina’s ouster, a Hindu association in Bangladesh has reported a surge in vandalization incidents, with hundreds of Hindu residences, commercial establishments, and sacred temples becoming targets. The association highlights the widespread damage inflicted on the Hindu community, sparking concerns over the safety and security of its members amid escalating tensions.
Hindus, who make up 8% of Bangladesh’s 170 million people, have a long-standing history of backing Hasina’s secular Awami League party over the Islamist opposition bloc. This support reflects their preference for a government that upholds secular values and ensures religious freedom for all citizens, aligning with their beliefs and aspirations for a more inclusive and tolerant society.
