At Army-2024, Russia’s Rosoboronexport unveiled a brand-new mobile electronic warfare system built on the Plastun-SN tracked armoured vehicle platform. The system blocks drone and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) electronic transmissions since it is outfitted with the Shield electronic warfare system. Four operators or eight fully equipped workers can be transported using the Plastun-SN.
Russian Ministry of Defense has taken delivery of 14 Plastun-SN vehicles
Fourteen Plastun-SN vehicles have been delivered to the Russian Ministry of Defence, demonstrating their operational preparedness and possible significance within the Russian Armed Forces. These Novosibirsk-made vehicles are intended for a range of military applications, such as self-propelled mortar platforms, medical evacuation, and reconnaissance.
The Plastun-SN is a military variant of the civilian Plastun all-terrain vehicle, with the “SN” designation indicating its “Special Purpose” capabilities. At the Army-2023 exhibition, two specific configurations were displayed: one equipped with an 82 mm mortar for artillery support and another with a telescopic mast and observation devices for reconnaissance. The vehicle’s performance was tested at the Alabino training ground.
The Plastun-SN has integrated armour that can withstand bullets with a diameter of 9×19 mm to 7.62×39 mm, providing good protection. But because of its open design, which is only shielded from some risks like drone attacks and enemy fire shrapnel by a removable frame and waterproof canopy, it is susceptible to some threats. The car has a 500 mm wide unique all-season track that improves its mobility on different types of terrain.
Weighing 3,800 kg, the vehicle can overcome obstacles such as ditches, trenches, and inclines
The Plastun-SN, powered by a 1.6-liter Lada petrol engine, can reach a top speed of 50 km/h and an optimal operating speed of 30 km/h. It is amphibious, capable of crossing water obstacles, and can climb steep slopes with a winch, weighing 3,800 kg.
Protection System, a Russian corporation, provides the OPD-712 “Shield” system, which forms the basis of the vehicle’s electronic warfare capabilities. To detect and suppress drones, this system combines the PD-704 “Perimeter” suppressor and the OD-712 “Lovets” detector. It has a detection range of up to 5 kilometres and a suppression range of up to 3 kilometres, and it can manage up to 30 UAVs at once. The system complies with Russian industrial and military standards and may run both manually and automatically.
By providing broad-spectrum suppression over a range of frequency ranges, the OPD-712 “Shield” system makes sure that UAVs lose control and that their satellite navigation is interfered with, which keeps them from going back to where they started. The system can serve as a component of a larger network of detection and suppression systems and is built to integrate extra suppressors as needed.
