In a vibrant show of support for Kamala Harris’s presidential campaign, Oprah Winfrey hosted a star-studded virtual rally that gathered numerous celebrities to amplify Harris’s message. The event, streamed on the Harris campaign’s YouTube channel, drew an impressive audience of around 300,000 viewers.
A Star-Studded Lineup
The rally featured prominent figures including Bryan Cranston, Chris Rock, Ben Stiller, Tracee Ellis Ross, Jennifer Lopez, and Julia Roberts.
Dwayne Johnson, also known as The Rock, shared his long standing support for Harris, revealing he donated to her campaign when she first ran for district attorney 20 years ago.
He expressed hope for a future where his daughters could meet a Black woman president, underscoring a desire for progress and positivity in politics.
Julia Roberts echoed similar sentiments, emphasising the importance of restoring America’s global reputation.
“I want people to say, ‘Oh, you’re American!’ and not ‘Oh, how’s it going?’” she stated, reflecting the collective wish for a renewed national identity.
During the rally, Oprah interviewed Harris, covering significant topics such as immigration, abortion rights, and the rising cost of living.
The lively format mirrored the essence of “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” engaging viewers with meaningful conversations.
Jen O’Malley Dillon, Harris’s campaign chair, highlighted the competitive nature of the race, stating that it’s “tied in all the battleground states,” emphasising the importance of such support in the lead-up to the elections.
A Legacy of Political Support
This virtual rally is not the first of its kind for Oprah Winfrey.
In 2020, she hosted a similar event for Joe Biden as part of her “OWN Your Vote” series, further solidifying her influence in political campaigns.
Winfrey’s ability to mobilise star power and engage audiences has proven to be a valuable asset for candidates seeking to connect with voters.
As the 2024 election approaches, such events underscore the role of celebrity endorsements in shaping political narratives and mobilising support.
