The US President, Joe Biden, stated his “optimistic” view on the likelihood of a ceasefire agreement being reached in Gaza, indicating his optimism for a peaceful end to the fighting in the area.
After the most recent round of negotiations, the US president stated “We are closer than we’ve ever been,” He announced sending his secretary of state to Israel to continue the “intensive efforts” to finalize the agreement.
Hamas has expressed skepticism about the chances of a deal with Israel, despite concerns that Iran may launch an attack on Israel for the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh.
President Biden emphasized that no action should be taken to undermine the process, while Israel appreciates the efforts of the US and mediators.
The Israeli military launched a campaign in Gaza to destroy Hamas
The Israeli military launched a campaign in Gaza to dismantle Hamas following an attack on southern Israel on October 7, resulting in 1,200 deaths and 251 hostages, and over 40,000 deaths since then, according to the Hamas-run health ministry.
In exchange for a week-long ceasefire and the release of 240 Palestinian inmates from Israeli prisons, Hamas consented to release 105 captives in November. Israel said there are still 111 captives, 39 of whom are thought to be dead. An offer to close the distance between Israel and Hamas was made by the US, Qatar, and Egypt.
The mediators have reported that the recent ceasefire discussions have been constructive and positive
They demands the release of remaining hostages taken to Gaza by militants during the 7 October attack. Some 251 hostages have been released, while others are believed to have died. The negotiations are seen as the last chance to save some of the hostages, as there is overwhelming pressure for a breakthrough after ten months of war.
If negotiations between Israel and Hamas fully collapse, there is a very real chance of a wider regional confrontation, which is something that everyone concerned is afraid of.
The mediators have reported that the recent ceasefire discussions have been constructive and positive. Technical teams are expected to continue working on implementing the proposed terms before senior government officials meet in Cairo to reach an agreement. Despite the positive developments, there is still a long way to go before a ceasefire is reached.
