A rocket from Lebanon struck a football pitch in the Israeli-controlled Golan Heights, killing 12 children and teenagers, and violence in the Middle East may escalate. The military has called this fatal incident the worst strike on civilians since October 7. It has increased expectations of a regional conflict between Israel and Hezbollah. Hezbollah, in an unusual step, rejected accountability.
Rocket Strike Incident
The unfortunate incident happened on Saturday when a missile struck a football pitch in Majdal Shams, a Druze village located close to the Syrian border and around 12 km south of Lebanon.
Twelve people were killed and twenty were injured when a rocket struck when dozens of kids and teenagers were playing. An eleven-year-old was listed as missing.
Druze, a Shiite Islam-originating religious sect, have communities in Israel, Syria, and Lebanon. About 25,000 Druze live in the Israeli-controlled Golan Heights. Despite being considered Israel’s most loyal citizens, those in the Golan Heights have a complex relationship with Israeli authorities.
During the 1967 Mideast War, Israel seized the strategically important plateau known as the Golan from Syria. It became annexed in 1981, a move that was not widely accepted internationally.
All-out Conflict
The attack on the football field could lead to a stronger Israeli response, increasing the risk of a broader war.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who had to rush back from the USA, warned Hezbollah that it would pay a heavy price for the attack. The Israeli military identified the rocket as a Falaq rocket with a 53-kilogram warhead belonging to Hezbollah.
Attacks along the Israel-Lebanon border have been severe but limited since the start of the Gaza conflict, But the number of casualties and the age of the victims could make Israel act more forcefully. With more weapons than Hamas, Hezbollah could put a great deal of pressure on Israel’s military, which is currently stationed in Gaza.
Initiatives for Peace
Negotiations for a ceasefire in Gaza are ongoing, with officials from the US, Egypt, and Qatar meeting with Israeli officials in Rome. Israel’s Mossad spy agency head, David Barnea, returned home for negotiations.
An Egyptian official noted that the attack in the Golan Heights could add urgency to the ceasefire discussions. He stated “Both fronts are connected, a cease-fire in Gaza will lead to a cease-fire with Hezbollah.”
The foreign ministry of Egypt demanded that other countries step in to stop the situation from getting worse.
The White House national security council is in discussions with Israel and Lebanon to resolve the ongoing attacks in the volatile border area. The Israeli military responded by striking several targets in Lebanon, resembling previous skirmishes with Hezbollah.
