Ukraine successfully breached Russian defensive lines and a stronghold in its unprecedented attack on Russia’s territory, according to experts from the Institute for the Study of War, as per an update on Wednesday.
Institute for the Study of War said “The current confirmed extent and location of Ukrainian advances in Kursk Oblast indicate that Ukrainian forces have penetrated at least two Russian defensive lines and a stronghold,”
Ukraine has not officially acknowledged making the attack
Russian officials acknowledged a cross-border operation, according to Valery Gerasimov, the Chief of Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, there could be as many as 1,000 Russian soldiers participating in the counteroffensive on Wednesday.
Ukraine has not officially acknowledged the attack, though some officials have indirectly mentioned it.
Ukraine has made confirmed advances of up to 6.2 miles into the region, marking an unusual offensive since Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022, according to geolocated footage of Ukrainian armored vehicles.
Russia may not have been ready for such an attack
Russia’s defensive lines are unclear, and it’s possible that it wasn’t prepared for a rare attack.
Ukraine’s counterattacks typically use long-range weapons like drones or Western missiles, rather than ground forces.
Russian military bloggers expressed anger over Russia’s ill-preparedness, according to The Moscow Times.
One of Ukraine’s main supporters, the US, too seems taken aback.
Matthew Miller, a spokesman for the US State Department, stated on Wednesday that the US had not received any early notice.
He said “It’s not unusual for Ukrainians not to notify their exact tactics before they execute them”.
Ukraine has been asked by US authorities not to deploy the long-range missiles it gave against targets located deep into Russia. That restriction has infuriated Ukrainian officials and analysts, who claim it benefits Russia.
In response to Ukraine’s move, Russian President Vladimir Putin described it as a “large-scale provocation.”
The US showed no sympathy. Miller replied that “it’s a little bit rich them calling it a provocation given Russia violated Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty” before them.
