Bangladesh’s ex Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina may leave India soon, sources claim she’s in talks with Russia and Finland for the same. It sounds like there was a change in Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s travel plans. Earlier it was reported that Hasina would move to London after a brief halt in India.
The ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who arrived in India on Monday, may depart within 48 hours. Sources indicate she is in discussions with Finland and Russia for her next destination. India is facilitating her safe exit and transit to Europe.
India’s S Jaishankar shares the details of Hasina’s emergency entry in India
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar told Parliament that following consultations with security leaders, Sheikh Hasina has decided to step down as Prime Minister.
“At very short notice, she requested approval to come for the moment to India. We simultaneously received a request for flight clearance from Bangladesh authorities. She arrived yesterday evening in Delhi.”
Why did Sheikh Haseena not got to London?
Hasina was initially expected to make a brief stop before proceeding to London, but this plan fell through. However much to her dismay, the UK Home Office did not agree. The office stated that British immigration rules require asylum seekers to apply in the first safe country they reach. This statement clearly implied she should seek asylum in India.
“The UK has a proud record of providing protection for people who need it. However, there is no provision for someone to be allowed to travel to the UK to seek asylum or temporary refuge. Those who need international protection should claim asylum in the first safe country they reach – that is the fastest route to safety,” a UK Home Office spokesperson told Indian channel NDTV.
Now Sheikh Hasina is in talks with Russia and Finland. The ousted ruler will seek asylum in either of these countries. Meanwhile, her own home is being raided by angry protesters who take away everything, from her suitcases to the food in her pantry.
We are yet to see how Bangladesh will recover from this political collapse. It will surely be tough to keep the whole scenario in check.
