By accepting the Democratic nomination for president, Kamala Harris has simultaneously made American history and called on Americans to help her write its next chapter. Her formal election as the first female vice president of the United States has made her the first Black and South Asian woman to be formally nominated for president by a major party, raising hopes among Democrats that she can defeat former President Donald Trump and hold onto the White House for another four years.

Her 40-minute speech unfolded in stories about her career as a tough-as-nails prosecutor, inspired as much by the plight of a close friend and civil rights legend as by tales of her time in the White House, Harris spoke not in lofty oratory but in a conversational manner. If the perennial question for women is how to run for office without seeming too shrill or too ambitious or too much of anything, Harris figured it out by simply being herself, laughing and all. She looked and sounded like an American president, was a forceful defender of democracy, and proud of our country’s ability to inspire and renew promise around the world.
Harris said she supports raising the corporate tax rate to 28 percent but offered no new policy proposals, but Democrats highlighted some of the most important issues pending throughout the convention, including abortion rights, gun safety and reducing the cost of living.

In her speech, Harris emphasizes the results of the Biden administration and emphasizes the progress of President Joe Biden’s mission. According to an excerpt from her campaign, she compares the American vision and the vision of former President Donald Trump. Harris will argue that while Trump may be considered “an unserious person,” “the consequences of Donald Trump returning to the White House would be extremely serious.”
