Apple revealed that they will modify the users’ choice browser options in the European Union, adding a dedicated section for changing default apps. Moreover, they will expand the number of apps that can be deleted.
“We Welcome Apple’s Updated Choice Screen”
Founder of the Aloha browser, Andrew Frost Moroz told Reuters, “We welcome Apple’s updated choice screen, particularly as it precedes the upcoming iPhone launches,”
The company has been compelled to implement changes following the enforcement of the EU’s Digital Markets Act on March 7. The new regulations require the iPhone maker to allow users to choose from a list of available web browsers on a “choice screen” when they first open Safari.
The updates will allow Apple users to select a default browser directly from the choice screen after going through the compulsory options.
The Choice Screen Will Also Be Available For iPads
Apple said that users in the EU will be presented with a randomly ordered list of 12 browsers with each accompanied by a brief description. Once a browser is selected, it will be automatically downloaded. The choice screen feature will also be available on iPads later this year.
Moreover, in March the company announced a previous update in response to the new rules. However, it was heavily criticized by the browser companies for the design of its choice screen. On March 25, the Commission inspected an investigation, saying that it was suspected that the measures didn’t fully meet the requirements of effective compliance.
Changes Will Address Regulators’ Concerns
“For those less familiar with us, the description will highlight these benefits, and fewer taps to start browsing will enhance the user experience and benefit third-party browsers,” said Moroz to Reuters.
Being in contact with the European Commission, Apple believes the new changes will address regulators’ concerns as the Commission said it will monitor the effectiveness of DMA achieving its objective and determining the next steps in the open case.
Additionally, It also plans to introduce a feature for default apps allowing users to set defaults for messaging, phone calls, spam filters, password managers, and keyboards, and users will have certain delete options made for Apple apps including App Store, Messages, Camera, Photos and Safari, except Settings and Phone apps which would not be removable.
