What Happened in Russia?

According to the regional governor of Russia’s Saratov area, a woman was hurt and homes in two large cities sustained damage on Monday as a result of a drone attack by Ukraine. Russian air defense systems destroyed drones that dropped debris into a residential complex in Saratov, causing damage, regional governor Roman Basurgin stated on the messaging app Telegram.

Monday saw the lifting of flight restrictions at Saratov Regional Airport in the wake of a drone attack by a Ukrainian that caused property damage and injured a lady. The flight restrictions were lifted about 9:30 a.m. (0530 GMT), according to the Russian news agency RIA, which first reported on them while citing the airport press service. 

According to regional governor Roman Basurgin on Telegram, a residential complex in the city sustained damage by drone debris that was intercepted by Russia’s air defense systems. Doctors were reportedly trying to save the life of a woman who was hospitalized in critical condition, according to Basurgin. Nine drones were destroyed by Russian air defense systems over the Saratov region, which is about 900 kilometers (560 miles) from the Ukrainian border, according to confirmation from the Russian Ministry of Defense.

Busargin added that emergency services have been sent to the impacted areas in Saratov and Engels, which are a few hundred kilometers southeast of Moscow, the capital of Russia, according to Reuters. After the Ukrainian drone collided with the ‘Volga Sky,’ a 38-story residential complex purported to be Saratov’s tallest structure, damage was observed. On social media, a video of the event has gone viral.

Saratov High rise 

Approximately 730 kilometers (454 miles) southeast of Moscow, along the Volga River, are the cities of Saratov and Engels. There was a brief morning restriction on flights at the regional airport, which is situated north of the capital city. Nine drones were intercepted overnight in the Saratov region by Russia’s air defense troops, according to the ministry of defense.

Drone debris also caused damage to other nearby structures, but no further injuries were recorded at the time. Since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Ukrainian drones have repeatedly attacked the Saratov region, with Engels Air Base, which houses strategic bombers southeast of Saratov, being a frequent target.

“We’ve spoken to the building’s residents, and we will make sure everyone gets the help they need,” Busargin said. “Once the area is cleared, residents will be allowed to retrieve their documents and other essential belongings with assistance from rescue workers.”
