Elon Musk has expressed his support for Telegram founder Pavel Durov following his imprisonment in France.
Durov, a Russian-born businessman, was arrested on various counts relating to his platform and faces up to 20 years in prison if found guilty, provoking global indignation and condemnation of his detention as an attack on free expression.
Musk went so far as to attack Mark Zuckerberg
The CEO of Tesla and SpaceX has expressed his disapproval of Pavel’s detention on social media multiple times since word of it first leaked. Musk even went so far as to criticize Mark Zuckerberg, arguing that the issue of “massive child exploitation” on his Instagram, which is owned by Meta, should be dealt with by the police.
Musk wrote on X “Instagram has a massive child exploitation problem, but no arrest for Zuck, as he censors free speech and gives governments backdoor access to user data,”
He also posted earlier “It is vital to the support of free speech that you forward X posts to people you know, especially in censorship-heavy countries.”
Musk and Zuckerberg have long been rivals
Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg have long been rivals, with a planned “cage fight” being called off. Musk’s attack on Zuckerberg came after Zuckerberg apologized to victims of online child sex abuse during a Senate hearing in February.
Mark said in the apology “I’m sorry for everything you have all been through. No one should go through the things that your families have suffered. And this is why we invest so much and we are going to continue doing industry-wide efforts to make sure no one has to go through the things your families have had to suffer,”
Earlier in May, Musk claimed that Zuckerberg-controlled Meta is “super greedy” in grabbing credit for marketers who execute campaigns on its platform. The X owner responded, “We are terrible at claiming credit, and Meta is super greedy at claiming credit.”
