The Asian Chess Federation (ACF) has announced the launch of its innovative ‘echess’ initiative, designed to integrate esports into the world of chess. This initiative aims to modernize the game and attract a younger audience by leveraging digital platforms and competitive online play. With the growing popularity of esports, the ACF seeks to create a vibrant community that combines traditional chess with cutting-edge technology, enhancing engagement and participation across Asia.
Goals of the ‘echess’ Initiative
The primary goal of the ‘echess’ initiative is to foster a new generation of chess players by making the game more accessible through online platforms. By creating a robust esports framework, the ACF aims to host regular online tournaments and events that encourage participation from players of all skill levels. This approach not only promotes competitive play but also seeks to build a sense of community among chess enthusiasts.
October 2024 will mark the start of the e-chess initiative, during which the AFC will conduct formal competitions and educational programs. National federations throughout Asia will be able to host chess player and community programs as part of the collaboration. The program seeks to leverage the notable expansion that the online chess community has undergone in recent years. Leading internet platforms said that since 2020, their user bases have grown by more than 400%.
The goal of ACF’s relationship with Checkmate Live is to provide new growth potential for esports chess as well as traditional over-the-board chess. The 2028 Chess Olympiad will be held in Abu Dhabi, therefore ACF claimed the initiative’s timing is favorable. The organization views this as a chance to highlight the chess and esports scenes in the area.
Future Prospects for Chess and Esports
The Asian Chess Federation President, Sheikh Sultan bin Khalifa Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, made the following statement during his opening remarks at the FIDE Olympiad: “Given the reputation of the Asian Chess Federation for initiative, I would like to use this platform to inspire each and every one of us to be trailblazers in the field of electronic chess.
Since chess is recognized as an esport, it has a special chance to flourish in this arena. The International Olympic Committee and the Olympic Council of Asia are both incorporating esports into their tournaments more and more. “With this in mind, I’m happy to announce that we are implementing the ‘Echess Initiative.'”
