Singer and songwriter Tyla has recently encountered a substantial amount of criticism and negative feedback on various social media platforms due to her appearance at the prestigious 2024 MTV Video Music Awards.

To elaborate, during the award ceremony held on Wednesday, the 22-year-old artist made a request for fellow celebrities Halle Bailey and Lil Nas X to assist her in holding her well-deserved trophy.

This act garnered significant attention and stirred diverse reactions from fans and the public alike.

“I cannot — I’m not strong enough.”

Tyla took the stage with Industry Baby artist Lil Nas X, 25, and Halle Bailey, 24, to win the event’s Best Afrobeat award. She made light of the trophy’s weight and informed the crowd “Oh my gosh, you guys know me and holding awards. Yo, I cannot — I’m not strong enough.”

During the exchange, Tyla momentarily passed the award to Lil Nas X, a gesture that signified a shift in the spotlight as she readied herself to deliver her acceptance speech.

With a hint of uncertainty, he accepted the moon man, caught off guard by the unexpected transfer. Meanwhile, Bailey, while watching the unfolding scenario, responded with a warm smile, choosing to observe rather than intervene.

The incident quickly spread across social media, drawing scrutiny from numerous online users who questioned Tyla’s actions.

“Y’all make everything weird”

Unfazed by the criticism, Tyla swiftly clarified the matter on social media. She said “Y’all make everything weird… I was not asking my girl Halle, We just girls, STFU I WON A VMAAAA.”

This remarkable journey reached a pinnacle in June 2024 when she graced the BET Awards stage, delivering a mesmerizing performance of her chart-topping hit “Jump”.

Infusing her South African heritage into the show, Tyla captivated audiences with her dancers adorned as a majestic tiger, a meaningful tribute to her devoted fan base known as “Tygers”.

Moreover, branching out beyond music, Tyla has made significant strides in the fashion realm, a fact solidified by her exquisite debut at the prestigious Met Gala in May 2024, where she radiantly showcased a Balmain gown inspired by the alluring essence of sand.
