According to Jannik Sinner, the scandal surrounding his doping is still bothering him. After winning his second Grand Slam victory in the US Open final over hometown favorite Taylor Fritz in 2024, he received recognition.
Controversy Of Sinner
In the lead-up to the US Open, controversy broke out when it was revealed that Sinner had tested positive twice for the drug clostebol in March of this year. The Italian was placed under temporary suspension, but it was later lifted after his team produced proof that he had unintentionally come into contact with the prohibited material.
After looking into the matter, a separate panel determined that Sinner’s infection was not the Italian’s fault. He did, however, lose the ranking points and prize money he had accrued from his March run to the BNP Paribas Open quarterfinals at Indian Wells.
There was pushback, with rumors circulating that Jannik Sinner was given special treatment. The dispute did not stop the Italian from performing at Flushing Meadows. In the seven matches he participated in at the 2024 US Open, Sinner only lost two sets. He was outstanding against Taylor Fritz in the championship match, winning 6-3, 6-4, and 7-5.
Jannik Sinner On His Controversies
During a press conference held after the game, Sinner was questioned about how he handled the criticism he received following the announcement of his positive clostebol test results. The top player in the world admitted that his support system was essential to his happiness.
“What allowed me to do that [winning US Open amid doping disclosure and criticism] was the people who were close to me daily, people who know me already when I was very young, and also my family and my team and everyone who supports me daily. You know I always try to stick together with them, especially when moments are getting difficult and tough, because I know they can help me in these moments,” Jannik Sinner said.”
“It was and it still is a little bit in my mind. It’s not that it’s gone. When I’m on court, I try to focus about the game. I try to handle the situation in the best possible way, communicate with the team on the practice courts.”
“Obviously, it was difficult for me to enjoy in certain moments, also how I behaved or how I walked on the court in certain tournaments before. It was not the same as I used to be. Whoever knows me, they knew something was wrong,” he added.
