A Spanish company, Halo Space, is set to revolutionise space tourism by launching balloon-powered space capsules from Saudi Arabia, with plans for up to 100 flights annually starting in 2026. These flights, taking passengers to an altitude of 35 kilometres, will provide breathtaking views of Earth’s curvature without the sensation of weightlessness. With test flights already completed in India and California, the company is preparing for its next launch in Saudi Arabia’s desert this September, positioning the kingdom as a potential hub for space tourism in the region.

Saudi Arabia’s Aspiring Role in Space Tourism

Saudi Arabia is positioning itself as a key player in the burgeoning space tourism industry with Halo Space planning to launch up to 100 flights annually by 2026. The initiative aims to capitalize on the region’s growing interest in space exploration, distinguishing the kingdom from its neighbors that focus more on government-led missions and satellite projects. Halo Space’s operations could spark the development of a broader space ecosystem in Saudi Arabia, particularly in the industrial sector, where the Aurora capsules will be assembled and tested.

This initiative aligns with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, which emphasizes diversifying the economy and promoting innovation-driven industries. By offering high-end space tourism experiences, the kingdom hopes to attract international tourists, boost local hospitality, and become a central hub for space-related activities in the region. Such ventures could potentially pave the way for a larger regional space tourism market, with Saudi Arabia taking the lead.

Luxury Balloon-Powered Space Flights: A New Frontier

Halo Space is offering a unique space tourism experience that blends luxury with an otherworldly adventure. Passengers will board the Aurora capsule, powered by a helium balloon, and ascend to 35 km above Earth, where they can see the planet’s curvature against the darkness of space. While passengers won’t experience weightlessness, they will enjoy panoramic views and fine dining during their four to six-hour journey. The ticket price of €150,000 places it in competition with similar services like Space Perspective, which offers a slightly more affordable experience from Florida.

Safety is a top priority for Halo Space, with multiple fail-safe systems in place, including parachutes and emergency controls to ensure a safe descent. The company is setting itself apart by offering customised experiences for each passenger, including personalised flight locations. Although space tourism is still in its early stages, Halo Space’s competitive pricing and innovative approach may gradually make space travel more accessible to a broader audience.
