Following extensive deliberation and careful consideration, the Scottish government ultimately made the momentous decision to host the highly anticipated 2026 Commonwealth Games in the vibrant city of Glasgow.
This significant announcement came after the Australian state of Victoria chose to withdraw from hosting the prestigious Games the previous year due to unforeseen escalating expenses that had exceeded initial estimations.

The 2026 Commonwealth Games, initially set to take place in various cities throughout Victoria, were restructured in July 2023 when the Australian state unexpectedly decided to withdraw from hosting the prestigious multi-sport event.
The reasoning behind this abrupt decision was linked to a significant escalation in the anticipated costs associated with the Games, prompting authorities to reassess their financial commitments and strategic priorities for the future.
The Commonwealth Federation had already expressed its dismay at Victoria’s unexpected withdrawal, calling it hugely disappointing.
Organizers in July said “We are disappointed that we were only given eight hours’ notice and that no consideration was given to discussing the situation to jointly find solutions prior to this decision being reached by the government,”
The long-term future of the Games remained unknown up to this point due to their growing struggle for relevance and the decline in the number of countries willing to host the event.

Yesterday, Neil Gray, Scotland’s Minister of Health and Sport, met with Commonwealth Games Australia to discuss finance and got the guarantees the Scottish government was seeking.
Twelve years after hosting the Games, the Scottish government announced plans to stage a “scaled-down version” of the event, with fewer events and competitors, spread among four city venues: swimming at Tollcross and athletics at Scotstoun Stadium.
It is now anticipated that 10 to 13 sports will be included in the CWG in 2026.
Ian Reid, chairman of Commonwealth Games Scotland said “We have been clear from the outset that our Games concept for Glasgow 2026 aligns with the CGF’s strategy to make the Games more accessible for future hosts, whilst ensuring that public funds are not required,”
He added “Glasgow is one of the few cities in the Commonwealth that can deliver on time given its world-class facilities, experienced workforce and strong supply chain. This is a really exciting opportunity and we will be working hard over the coming days to bring the final pieces of the puzzle together.”
The final Games took place in England in 2022 as a result of Birmingham’s last-minute substitution.
