Algerian boxer Imane Khelif and Italian Angela Carini’s fight, which sparked controversy due to Khelif failing a sex test at the World Championship the previous year, was halted after 46 seconds due to Carini’s suspected broken nose, raising pressure on the International Olympic Committee to clarify the situation.

Failed Biomechanical test for two years previously

Due to two years of failing biochemical tests, Khelif was prohibited by the International Boxing Association from participating in a gold-medal bout in Delhi.

The IOC nevertheless gave her permission to compete in these Olympics. As soon as Carini took a punch to the face, she quickly signaled to her corner that she could not continue, demonstrating the combatants’ differing powers.

Social media users were outraged by the little altercation and were talking about it. The matchup was contentious in the first place.

“An absolute scandal”

Chief Sports Writer of The Telegraph, Oliver Brown wrote “In a highly emotional interview, Angela Carini has just explained that she abandoned because she had never been punched so hard. Imane Khelif said nothing. And this is the issue that the IOC’s Mark Adams suggested everyone should just ‘dial down’. An absolute scandal.”

Former British Prime Minister Lizz Truss also commented on the situation, she wrote  “When will this madness stop? Men cannot become women. Why is the British Government not objecting to this?”

Harry Potter writer, J.K. Rowling also wrote “What will it take to end this insanity? A female boxer left with life-altering injuries? A female boxer killed?”

Social Media users are also commenting on the situation, one wrote “Today, Angela Carini had her Olympics dreams shattered by Imane Khelif, a male boxer. It is suspected that he BROKE HER NOSE. Don’t let this pass quietly. MEN SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED TO BEAT WOMEN FOR SPORT. SAVE WOMEN’S SPORTS.”

“I didn’t give up, but one punch hurt too much and so I said enough”

Angela Carini also commented on her fight, she stated “I got into the ring to fight, I didn’t give up, but one punch hurt too much and so I said enough, I’m going out with my head held high.”

Emanuele Renzini, Carini’s coach, said “It would have been easier not to show up, because all of Italy had been asking her not to fight for days,” Renzini added “But Angela was motivated and wanted to do it. Of course, when she met her opponent at the draw, she said ‘it’s not fair.’ But there was no premeditation here today, she quit after taking one punch, she told me she didn’t feel she could fight.”
