 Early Life and Career

Tim Walz was born and raised in rural Nebraska, the son of a school administrator and a stay-at-home mother. Walz joined the Army National Guard at the age of 17, serving for 24 years and achieving the rank of Command Sergeant Major. 

Before entering politics, Walz was a dedicated secondary school teacher. He spent a year teaching in China before returning to Nebraska and later moving to Minnesota. In Minnesota, he taught social studies and geography and coached American football. His wife, Gwen Whipple, also a teacher, played a significant role in his move to Minnesota.

 Political Journey

Walz’s political career began somewhat accidentally when he volunteered for John Kerry’s 2004 presidential campaign, motivated by an incident where two of his students were turned away from a George W. Bush campaign event. In 2006, he was elected to the US Congress, representing a predominantly Republican district in Minnesota. Walz’s ability to connect with his constituents and his pragmatic approach to politics helped him secure re-election multiple times in a district that had historically leaned Republican.

As the governor of Minnesota since 2018, Walz has overseen one of the most productive legislative periods in the state’s history.
