Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has come to the defense of his running mate, Senator JD Vance, regarding his controversial comments about “childless cat ladies.” In a recent interview with Fox News, Trump emphasized Vance’s intention to highlight the value of family life, while also addressing the recent assassination attempt against him during a campaign rally in Pennsylvania.
Trump Backs Vance’s Family Comments
Senator JD Vance’s 2021 remarks criticizing Vice President Kamala Harris and other Democrats as “a bunch of childless cat ladies who are miserable at their own lives” resurfaced after Trump selected him as his running mate earlier this month. The comments sparked backlash and concerns from political strategists about potential negative impacts on the Trump campaign.
In his defense, Trump explained, “He grew up in a very interesting family situation, and he feels family is good. And I don’t think there’s anything wrong in saying that.” He further clarified, “You know, you don’t meet the right person, or you don’t meet any person. But you’re just as good, in many cases, a lot better than a person that’s in a family situation.”
Despite the controversy, Trump reassured that he does not place a higher value on individuals with families, aiming to downplay any perceived insensitivity from Vance’s comments.
Addressing the Assassination Attempt
Trump also addressed the recent assassination attempt on his life during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. The FBI is investigating the incident involving 20-year-old Thomas Crooks, who was identified by law enforcement before the shooting occurred. Trump confirmed that he would sit for an interview with the FBI this week.
Kevin Rojek, the special agent in charge of the FBI’s Pittsburgh field office, provided a timeline of events leading up to the shooting. Crooks was seen as a suspicious person and was photographed by a local officer who shared the image with other law enforcement officials at the rally. Just minutes before the shooting, Crooks was seen using a rangefinder and browsing news sites.
Rojek stated, “The shooter was identified by law enforcement as a suspicious person.” Crooks was later spotted on a police dashboard camera walking on the roof from where he ultimately fired the shots. Crooks was shot dead by a Secret Service agent after opening fire.
Trump’s Reaction and Future Plans
Despite the assassination attempt, Trump remains resolute in continuing his campaign. He stated during the Fox News interview, “I’ll probably end up debating,” referring to the upcoming debate with Vice President Kamala Harris, previously scheduled against President Joe Biden. Trump added, “But I can also make a case for not doing it.”
Trump’s resilience and determination to continue holding outdoor rallies were evident as he insisted on maintaining his public presence. He remains critical of the FBI but has agreed to cooperate with their investigation to provide his perspective on the incident.
