Amid a new round of clashes erupted in Bangladesh between demonstrators and the ruling Awami League supporters of Dhaka, at least 24 people were killed and many others injured on Sunday, August 4. The country’s government, to control the situation, has ordered a nationwide internet shutdown of 4G services.
Huge Protests In July
Earlier protests in July, Which included demonstrators demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, with students protesting to put an end to a quota system for government jobs turned into a massive violence that left more than 200 dead.
At Least 11,000 people were arrested when the government, in response to the situation, closed schools and universities across the country, blocked internet access, and imposed a shoot-on-sight curfew.
The Latest Clashes
The latest clashes, when protesters called for the non-cooperation program to demand PM Hasina’s resignation, faced opposition from the activists of the ruling Awami League and its associated bodies
“At least two people have been killed and 30 others injured in a clash between protesters and Awami League men in Munshiganj,” the Dhaka Tribune newspaper reported.
Hundreds of students and professionals gathered at Dhaka’s Shahbagh and blocked traffic on all sides. In addition, they attacked Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University, a major public hospital in Dhaka’s Shahbagh area, torching several vehicles.
At least 20 people suffered from injuries in clashes
The demonstrators were protesting, under the banner of the Anti-Discrimination Students Movement, with loud chants, calling for Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s resignation and justice for those killed in the recent violence surrounding the quota reform protests.
At least 20 people were rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital after suffering injuries in clashes between protesters on one side and Awami League and police on the other side, as per Bangladesh’s Daily Star publication reports
