Simone Biles has reached double digits in Olympic medals, winning her third gold medal in the vault apparatus final at the Paris Olympics. She also won her 10th medal and seventh gold. Andrade won silver, while Jade Carey took bronze.
Today’s landing was the best of her performances in Paris
The first day of individual apparatus finals in Paris began with men’s floor exercise, women’s vault, and men’s pommel horse.Gymnasts must execute two different vaults with distinct entry onto the vaulting table in order to obtain an individual apparatus medal in vault.
Biles performed her iconic Yurchenko double pike, “Biles II,” in Paris, earning a 15.700. Her second vault, “Cheng,” involved a half-turn onto the table and a 1.5 twist into the air, scoring a 14.900, resulting in a 15.300 average between the two vaults.
In Paris, she saw even more formidable opposition from Andrade, who paralleled Biles’ flawless performance but lagged significantly behind Biles in terms of difficulty.
Andrade achieved a 15.100 for her Cheng and a 14.833 for her Amanar, earning an average of 14.966, below Biles’ 15.300. She chose not to debut her original skill, the “Andrade,” but performed a 2.5 twist, Amanar.
She is now the most decorated American gymnast in the history of the Olympic Games
She became the most decorated American gymnast in Olympic Games history, surpassing ‘Magnificent Seven’ member Shannon Miller who won eight medals.
Her win in the individual all-around Thursday made her first American and just the third gymnast in history to win the Olympic all-around gold medal more than once. The others – Larisa Latynina of the Soviet Union and Věra Čáslavská of Czechoslovakia – last competed in the 1960s.
Biles performed her “Biles II” vault in Paris for the third time, completing both vaults in Sunday’s qualification to qualify for the vault final. She initially planned to use her more conservative Cheng vault in the all-around final.
In the end, Biles concluded that in order to defeat Andrade for the all-around gold, she would have to do the “Biles II” vault.
Biles said smiling “I don’t want to compete with Rebeca no more, I’m tired. She’s way too close. I’ve never had an athlete that close, so it definitely put me on my toes and brought out the best athlete in myself.”
