Jahmari Reid, a sophomore student in grade 10 at William Knibb Memorial High School, tragically lost his life on August 26. He was discovered alone in the waters, where he had gone unaccompanied.
His mother, Lavern Robinson, bravely shared the heartbreaking news with various local media channels, alerting the public to the devastating incident.
“Jahmari has been going to sea from him small”
Robinson said “Right now [I] don’t know what to say. Jahmari has been going to sea from him small,” According to the outlet, Jahmari was attacked and had his left hand and skull severed.
Requests for response were not immediately answered by William Knibb High School, the Trelawny Police Division, or the Jamaica Constabulary Force.
Fisherman Christopher Reynolds reported that divers found Jahmari’s remains and brought him to Falmouth Fishing Beach. He had been informed of a “big” tiger shark in the water near his body, but the animal was not caught.
“I can’t believe that he went to sea by himself”
Jahmari’s father, Michael Reid said “I can’t believe that he went to sea by himself … and that was the outcome. Sad to know. I feel so bad,”
One more fisherman added “I have been fishing for years and this never happened in Falmouth. If you are spearfishing and you have a string of fish and a shark start circling let go of the string and give him.”
Falmouth Fisherfolks Benevolent Society President Fritz Christie sadly reported the very first fatality in recent history within the Trelawny area, suggesting a potential link to a shark that was suspected to have followed a cruise ship and lingered in the vicinity, raising concerns about safety in the waters around the region.
Audrey Steele, the dedicated vice principal at Jahmari’s school, fondly described him as a quiet and well-mannered young man with an admirable demeanor. Throughout his time at the school, Jahmari consistently maintained a positive attitude, demonstrating excellent behavior and never getting entangled in any disciplinary concerns.
