On August 11, a woman and her daughter were murdered in a murder-suicide in North Carolina by the child’s father. According to WRAL, DaQuan Marcato Jones, 32, shot his child’s mother, Kiera Massenburg, 27, and the child, Zoey Jones, 6; two other people were also injured in the incident.
The whole matter as reported
WNCN reports Jones took off with the girl and Massenburg in the automobile from the Sharpsburg, North Carolina, scene of that shooting. After he left Zoey at a house in Nash County with potentially fatal injuries, she was brought to the hospital and passed away the same evening, according to WRAL.
One of the injured victims was reportedly in critical condition, while the other had been discharged from the hospital, according to the site.
Authorities discovered Jones’ car in the driveway of a residence on Jamie Rd. near Battleboro, North Carolina, when they arrived, according to a press release posted on Facebook by the Nash County Sheriff’s Office (NCSO). Authorities discovered a woman, subsequently identified as Massenburg, dead in the backseat of the car when they got closer to it.
“Units heard a gunshot coming from within the house as they were drawing closer to it. Units surrounding the house at this point.” The news release stated, “After exiting the residence through the side door, a male subject informed us that the suspect had shot himself.”
Then, in one of the house’s bedrooms, authorities discovered Jones dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The shooter and the victim details
Jones had been freed from Edgecombe County Detention Center on August 10th, according to jail records that WNCN was able to obtain. After being accused with assault causing serious bodily injury following an incident in July 2024 where he allegedly punched Massenburg in the face, breaking her nose and knocking out her teeth, he was serving his sentence.
The two had allegedly been dating, according to the authorities.
“Kiera was a loving mother, a treasured friend, and a source of support for everyone who knew her,” read the description on a GoFundMe page established to assist Massenberg and Zoey’s family with burial expenses. “Zoey, her child, was a kind and innocent soul who made everyone they came in contact with happy and loved.” They had an unbreakable link, and those who loved them are left with an unfillable hole in their hearts.”
