After just two seasons at Manchester City, Julián Álvarez joined Atlético Madrid, claiming he sought “a new challenge.” The Argentina international signed a deal to join Atlético earlier this week for £82 million ($104 million), ending his contract with City, which ran until June 2028.
“I felt that I needed a change in my career,”
While unveiling as a new Atletico player, Alvarez said “I felt that I needed a change in my career, I needed to look for a new challenge and I believe that this club gives me the tools to give my best.”
Despite making 54 appearances for City previous season and scoring 19 goals, Alvarez was unable to unseat Erling Haaland as the team’s starting striker.
He said “I’ve come here to help the team and to fight for every title, I’m very happy and motivated.”
He also added “I spoke to [Diego] Simeone and he said he wanted me to come here. He said that I was going to help the team and they would enhance my strengths and help me improve on my weaknesses. My aim is to show my best form, help the team win and take Atlético to the highest level.”
The 24-year-old won six trophies at City
Six trophies were won by the 24-year-old at City, including two Premier League crowns and one Champions League. He won the Copa América earlier this summer and was a highlight in Argentina’s 2022 World Cup victory while he was a member of the team.
Alvarez stated “I learned a lot there [at City], I’m grateful for the two years I’ve been there.”
Alvarez expressed his excitement for working under Pep Guardiola and Simeone, stating that they are among the best coaches in the world. He acknowledged that despite winning the World Cup, he still has much to learn and improve and expressed his happiness in working with Simeone for his club and world football.
On August 19, Atletico Madrid takes on Villarreal away in their La Liga opener.
