Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has expressed his sentiments regarding critics of the Premier League champion, stating that he believes they harbour a desire to see the club completely eradicated “from the face of the Earth” due to the alleged breaches of financial rules.
This strong statement reflects the intense scrutiny and pressure faced by the club in the wake of these accusations, highlighting the significant impact such controversies can have on reputations and perceptions within the football community.
Hearing into charges finally began at the start of the week
If found guilty of any or all of the 115 allegations pertaining to financial restrictions, City, who has dominated English football since Guardiola’s arrival in 2016, may potentially be expelled from the league or incur a significant reduction of points.
At the beginning of the week, the eagerly anticipated hearing regarding the charges filed by the Premier League in February 2023 finally got underway.
Guardiola has previously voiced his belief that certain clubs are secretly wishing for his club to be convicted of wrongdoing, and he is confident that they anticipate severe consequences if such a situation were to arise.
During a discussion about the tendency for individuals to overly scrutinise isolated poor performances, Guardiola raised this issue without being prompted, leading up to the upcoming match against Arsenal at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.
“I want to defend my club”
Guardiola said “During a season, you can say, ‘Oh, it was a bad season’, But for performances some people say, ‘Oh, it’s a disgrace, it is a disaster, it’s unacceptable’. No, during 90 minutes it’s one bad afternoon when they were better.”
He added “But I would say – I’m sorry, I want to defend my club, especially in these modern days when everyone is expecting us not to be relegated, to be disappeared off the face of the Earth, the world – that we have better afternoons than the opponents. That’s why we win a lot,”
During the period spanning from 2009 to 2018, Manchester City Football Club found itself entangled in a total of 80 instances where it breached financial regulations.
Additionally, the club was implicated in another 35 cases involving non-compliance with a Premier League inquiry.
These allegations point to a lack of accurate financial disclosures by the club, particularly concerning revenue sources such as sponsorships and the compensation details of both the managerial staff and players.
Despite the accusations levelled against them, Manchester City has vehemently refuted any claims of misconduct or violations in their financial practices.
