A tragic incident occurred during a high school football game in Alabama, resulting in the death of 16-year-old quarterback Caden Tellier. The injury happened during a tackle while playing for John T. Morgan Academy in Selma. This devastating event has deeply affected the local community and highlights the risks associated with high school sports.

Tragic Incident

On Friday, during a game against Southern Academy, Caden Tellier a 16-year-old high schooler Caden Tellier sadly suffering a head injury during a football game sustained a severe injury in the third quarter. 

John T. Morgan Academy, founded in 1965 in Selma, Alabama, was initially a segregation academy. Named after Confederate general John Tyler Morgan, the school’s first classes were held in his house until the new campus opened in 1967.

As Tellier was running with the ball, a Southern defender tackled him, causing him to fall and hit his head.

Although the tackle was not initially perceived as violent, Tellier began to stagger and later became unresponsive. 

Despite immediate medical attention and being airlifted to a hospital, Tellier did not recover. Preliminary findings suggest that internal bleeding in the brain was the cause of death.

Community and Family Reactions

Caden Tellier’s death has led to an outpouring of support from his community and beyond. 

His mother, Arsella Slagel Tellier, expressed her grief and highlighted her son’s legacy of kindness and generosity.

A GoFundMe page to cover funeral expenses has already raised significant funds, and Tellier’s status as an organ donor has been noted as a final act of giving. 

The local school, Morgan Academy, has cancelled all classes and activities for the week to allow the community to grieve and support each other.

 This tragic event is part of a concerning trend of young athletes suffering fatal injuries in high school sports.
