Aaron Ramsdale, the talented England goalkeeper known for his exceptional skills on the field, made the decision to depart Arsenal following the loss of his starting position to David Raya.
After weighing his options, Ramsdale officially signed with Southampton last Friday, sealing a lucrative four-year contract for a noteworthy initial fee of 18 million pounds (equivalent to $23.7 million).
Ramsdale was named in the Premier League’s team of the year
Ramsdale, who was named to the Premier League’s Team of the Year two years ago, was dropped from Arsenal’s squad last year owing to Raya’s arrival.
Despite being prepared for another season as Raya’s deputy, Ramsdale has chosen to test himself with a team that is projected to be relegated following promotion.
Ramsdale said “Coming back down to the south coast as well for me and my family, it would be an easier transition than most, so I feel like I can hit the ground running,”
“I’m looking forward to this year, just getting back to what I do best and having a big smile on my face while doing it here.” He added.
“I’m very grateful to the ownership and the board for making it happen”
With Ramsdale earning five caps, Southampton manager Russell Martin called the signing of an England international a “statement signing.”
He stated “I’m very grateful to the ownership and the board for making it happen, especially as so many other clubs were keen to get him,”
He also continued “Aaron is obviously a very talented goalkeeper, but also an impressive all-round football player, which is clearly important for us with the way we play.”
Southampton, a team in the Premier League, has kicked off their season on a disappointing note by suffering two consecutive defeats in their opening matches, highlighting a challenging start to their campaign.
