Gladiator II trailer is out. Paul Mescal plays Lucius in the upcoming Ridley Scott picture Gladiator 2, which opens on Monday, September 23. Paul Mescal is the nephew of Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix), the antagonist, and the son of Lucilla (Connie Nielsen) in the first Gladiator.
“With rage in his heart and the future of the Empire at stake”
In the latest teaser, Lucius is shown meeting Denzel Washington’s Macrinus, who suggests using Lucius’ prowess in the gladiator ring to protect his own authority in the old empire and depose emperors played by Fred Hechinger and Joseph Quinn. Pedro Pascal portrays a Roman general Lucius wants to exact revenge on.
Official synopsis of the movie stated “Years after witnessing the death of the revered hero Maximus at the hands of his uncle, Lucius (Paul Mescal) is forced to enter the Colosseum after his home is conquered by the tyrannical Emperors who now lead Rome with an iron fist, With rage in his heart and the future of the Empire at stake, Lucius must look to his past to find strength and honor to return the glory of Rome to its people.”
“There’s already an idea,”
After the new Gladiator sequel opens in theaters in November, 86-year-old filmmaker Scott has already stated that he plans to produce a third Gladiator film, according to interviews with The Hollywood Reporter and Premiere in France.
He said “There’s already an idea,” claiming that Francis Ford Coppola’s epic The Godfather Part II from 1974 served as the basis for his idea for the third tale in the series.
The next action epic stars Connie Nielsen as Lucius’ mother Lucilla, reprising her role from the series’ first installment, which was starred by Russell Crowe 24 years ago.
At the 73rd Academy Awards in 2001, the original Gladiator took home five awards, out of a total of 12 nominations.
