In an exclusive conversation with PEOPLE, Jenna Bush Hager, co-host of Today with Hoda & Jenna, shared her deep admiration for her twin sister Barbara Bush. Speaking at a book event in New York on September 25, Jenna revealed how her sister has been her pillar of strength and a source of inspiration throughout their lives. Jenna highlighted their special bond, saying, “She was the first hand I held.”
Their Shared Love for Reading
Growing up as “major readers,” Jenna and Barbara’s love for literature continues to bind them.
Jenna often recommends books to Barbara, including Blue Sisters by Coco Mellors, which was September’s pick for Jenna’s book club.
She found the novel relatable as it captures the complexities of sisterhood. Jenna commented, “The sisters in the book are flawed, just like all of us. But they’re better when they find a home for each other.”
The twins, daughters of former President George W. Bush and Laura Bush, share a lifelong connection.
Jenna explained that Barbara has always empowered her to take on new challenges, including her career in broadcasting and founding her book club.
“I don’t think I’d have this job without her. She makes me feel brave,” Jenna said, emphasising how Barbara was her first audience and continues to support her every step of the way.
Sisterhood and Public Moments
Jenna fondly recalled moments shared not only with her sister but with her father, George W. Bush.
She humorously recounted a time when her dad playfully roasted her in front of Barack Obama during a public event, highlighting the unique dynamics of growing up in a presidential family.
The love and humour within their family continue to shape Jenna’s public persona.
