Eric Stonestreet Reflects on the Hurt of a Rejected Modern Family Spinoff

In a recent interview, Modern Family star Eric Stonestreet opened up about the emotional impact of ABC’s decision to reject a proposed spin off centered on his character Cam Tucker and Jesse Tyler Ferguson’s Mitch Pritchett. The spinoff, which would have followed the couple’s life in Missouri after they moved from California, was seen as a promising continuation of their story. Stonestreet described the rejection as “hurtful,” expressing disappointment not only for himself but also for Ferguson and series co-creator Chris Lloyd, who had invested time and effort into developing a script that he believed had significant potential.

Stonestreet claimed that the network’s choice made him and Ferguson feel marginalized, implying that they were seen as “the old guys” who weren’t deserving of having their characters’ stories continued. With a statement that highlighted their intense chemistry, he said, “I love my role. I adore the program. Jesse is my love. Our working connection was excellent.” He acknowledged that business considerations frequently take precedence over creative ideals, notwithstanding his hurt feelings.

The Lost Opportunity for a Successful Series

Stonestreet expressed confidence that the spinoff would have succeeded in spite of the lost opportunity. “I think it would have been a slam dunk,” he said, emphasizing that the series had all the making ingredients needed for success if the appropriate individuals had been involved in its production, including Lloyd. In the end, Stonestreet regretted that ABC officials had not pursued the concept, even with a strong script and enthusiastic support from the public.

Although Stonestreet accepts the decision and thinks the opportunity for the spinoff has closed, he is still excited about working with his Modern Family co-stars in the future. He proposed that a holiday special might be a workable substitute for keeping fans updated on their cherished characters. As rumors of possible reunions spread among the actors, Stonestreet’s observations serve as a helpful reminder of the difficulties and successes encountered in the entertainment business.
