Chappell Roan, the talented “Good Luck, Babe!” singer, recently achieved a significant milestone in her music career by winning her maiden VMA as the best new artist at the prestigious 2024 MTV VMAs.
The thrilling event took place at New York’s UBS Arena on Wednesday, Sept. 11, where Roan’s captivating performance and undeniable talent were recognized and celebrated on a grand scale.
“I dedicate this to queer and trans people that fuel pop”
The music artist, 26, who goes by Kayleigh Amstutz in real life, accepted the prize on stage wearing a chain link dress and headgear and gave a speech that was taken from out of her journal.
Roan thanked MTV, her crew, her family, and friends before expressing gratitude to drag queens who inspire her. She said “I dedicate this to queer and trans people that fuel pop. To the gays who dedicate my songs to someone they love — or hate.”
She continued “And thank you to the people who are fans, who listen to me, who hear me when I share my joy and my fears. Thank you. For all the queer kids in the Midwest watching right now: I see you. I understand you because I’m one of you, and don’t ever let anyone tell you that you can’t be exactly who you want to be.”
“I think people like to party and I think my project feels like a party,”
Roan, who released her debut album, The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess, in September 2023, rose to prominence on the summer festival circuit and has since had seven Billboard Hot 100 singles, including “Pink Pony Club,” “My Kink Is Karma,” and “Femininomenon.”
Roan’s energetic and campy live shows, featuring dress codes and themes like “slumber party kissin’,” “goth grunge and glitter,” and “so you wanna be a pop star,” attract fans.
She previously stated “I think people like to party and I think my project feels like a party, I think that people just want to be happy and reflect, sing, dance and dress up, and feel free. The project gives people an opportunity to express themselves without judgment and freedom to discover themselves in the same way that I feel like the project allows me to discover myself.”
Roan performed at the 2024 VMAs and received nominations for Push performance of the year, song of summer, and best trending video for “Hot to Go!”.
