“Being bald is amazing” 50 year old actress and producer Towanda Braxton opens up on being diagnosed with alopecia. At The Braxtons premiere at the West Cultural Arts Center on Thursday, Aug. 8, she tells PEOPLE that she is open about her alopecia diagnosis and plans to share her experience with the condition on her new show.
What is Towanda Braxton’s perspective towards Alopecia?
Hair is a big part of a person’s vanity. Most, if not all, humans are more than conscious of their hair. While these tresses are a common part of a normal human life, people suffering with many diseases may lose them.
Actress Towanda Braxton recently opened up about her diagnosis of Alopecia and surprisingly enough, she was relieved!
Towanda says she initially had an idea that she had alopecia “by definition,” but it only became “real” when she finally “got the diagnosis from the doctor.”
“I felt relieved,” the singer recalls. “Because I was like, ‘Okay, I hate being right about that, but I was right about that,’ you know?”
The Envision actress addresses common misconceptions about her alopecia diagnosis, noting that while alopecia is often thought not to be hereditary, it can actually be inherited. She emphasizes the importance of understanding these nuances to better inform and educate others about the condition.
“And then there are so many different types of alopecia,” she adds. “And it’s important for you to find out which one you have. So just in case you have children, they’ll know how to treat it.”
“For everyone else who’s going through the same journey, [I want to tell them] that it’s okay, and your hair does not define who you are,” she says.
What is Alopecia?
Alopecia is a condition that leads to hair loss, as explained by the American Academy of Dermatology Association (AADA). It can result in patchy hair loss on various body parts, with hair sometimes regrowing but potentially falling out again. This pattern of regrowth and loss can persist throughout a person’s life, according to the AADA.
The disease made its way into everyone’s head when actor Will Smith’s wife Jada Smith admitted to be suffering from it. What followed was Chris Rock’s infamous joke in an award function. A joke that ended up in Will Smith punching the comic for “disrespecting his wife”.
