Anna Delvey is crafting a new life following her time on “Dancing with the Stars,” sharing all the details with co-star Tori Spelling.
Delvey Addresses Backlash on Misspelling Podcast
During a recent episode of Tori Spelling’s iHeartRadio podcast “Misspelling,” Anna Delvey opened up about her stoic public persona, which received backlash from “Dancing with the Stars” fans. Delvey, who described the double eliminations of herself and Spelling as “suspicious,” gave an unexpected answer when the “Beverly Hills, 90210” star asked her if she felt nervous on the show.
“The way I’ve been introduced into the public eye, I went through my criminal trial and when you’re in court, it’s obviously like a public courtroom so anyone can come in, they take pictures of you all day, every day (for) about seven hours and there’s nothing you can do about it,” Delvey told Spelling, as reported by USA Today.
Delvey expressed that it felt “a bit upsetting” and like “a waste of time” to be “discarded so easily” from the competition. She acknowledged that while her elimination wasn’t entirely surprising due to her younger audience, it was embarrassing to be eliminated before contestants like Eric Roberts and Reginald VelJohnson, who had received lower scores.
Delvey, originally named Anna Sorokin, was cast on Season 33 of “Dancing with the Stars” after being accused of orchestrating schemes to fund a luxurious lifestyle and personal business ventures, ultimately stealing $275,000 from hotels, banks, and affluent New Yorkers.
Delvey Reflects on Her Dance Performance and Emotions
Delvey stated that she believed her dancing was “decent,” scoring a total of 36 out of 60 points during the first two weeks of competition.
“I’m used to always being on guard, and it doesn’t benefit you to cry or show any emotion because it would always be interpreted in some way that’s not beneficial to you,” Delvey continued, later admitting that she was “nervous.”
“I think my focus was ‘oh, it’s a dancing competition’ so it’s like I have to perform like the steps because that’s how I’ve been trained,” Delvey stated.
While discussing the importance of smiling during their performances on “Dancing with the Stars,” Delvey questioned Spelling whether it felt “jarring for people to demand women to smile in 2024.” She suggested that the criticism stemmed from “remnants of kind of like the old patriarchal” beliefs.
“You can only be good and considered to be good when you look pretty and smile,” Delvey stated.
Delvey told Spelling, “Either scenario, he wins. If I do well, he does well. If I do badly, it’s my fault because he’s the new one and I’m so bad and just negative.” Addressing criticism from “Dancing with the Stars” fans regarding her partnership with Sosa, Delvey emphasized that she’s “not, like, some abuser” and insisted that she’s “not torturing him.” This comes as she reflects on her time as the inspiration for Netflix’s “Inventing Anna,” which starred Julia Garner.
