Colton Herta has made a bold move by stepping away from a successful IndyCar career to pursue Formula 1. Backed by Cadillac and Andretti Global, Herta will race in F2 next season to gain experience on European tracks and earn the superlicence points needed for F1 entry.
Cadillac’s Role in the American Push
Cadillac’s involvement adds weight to the bid, offering a major American brand to support Herta’s journey. Dan Towriss, CEO of TWG Motorsports, emphasized the importance of doing things the “right way,” with full immersion in F2 and testing programs designed to prepare Herta for the top tier.
Why F1 Needs a Winning American
Despite F1’s growing popularity in the US, the lack of a competitive American driver has limited its cultural impact. Logan Sargeant’s struggles at Williams didn’t move the needle. Experts believe only a winning American can truly ignite fan passion, similar to what Michael Schumacher did for Germany and Fernando Alonso for Spain.
High Stakes, Big Rewards
Herta’s move is risky. If he succeeds, it could open doors for other American drivers and reshape how US talent enters F1. If he struggles, it may reinforce doubts about the transition from IndyCar. Still, his commitment and Cadillac’s backing make this one of the most ambitious American bids in recent F1 history
