Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish has admitted the club may be forced to sell captain Marc Guehi this summer. The England defender has entered the final year of his contract and has shown no signs of agreeing to an extension. Parish said the club cannot afford to lose a player of Guehi’s calibre on a free transfer.
“We’d have to do that, of course,” Parish told reporters. “For players of that calibre to leave on a free, it’s a problem for us unfortunately.”
Liverpool and Newcastle Monitoring Situation
Liverpool remain interested in Guehi but are reluctant to meet Palace’s £45 million asking price. Newcastle, who had a £70 million bid rejected last year, are also considering a renewed approach. Guehi is reportedly open to a move to Anfield, though no formal offers have been made.
Palace’s Transfer Challenges
Parish’s comments came after Palace lifted the Community Shield, beating Liverpool in a penalty shootout. Despite the silverware, manager Oliver Glasner has voiced frustration over limited transfer activity. Palace have only signed two senior players this summer—goalkeeper Walter Benitez and defender Borna Sosa.
“It’s difficult,” Parish said. “We have an outstanding 15 or 16 players, trying to get that level of quality in is hard. The money at every football club is finite at some point.”
A Decision Looms
With Guehi’s contract expiring in 2026 and no progress on a renewal, Palace face a tough decision. Parish confirmed the club will consider offers in the final weeks of the transfer window.
“It needs a new contract or a conclusion of some kind,” he said. “We’ll do whatever we can, but we have to make smart decisions.”
