PSG vs Real Madrid: Enrique on Mbappe Reunion

Paris Saint-Germain head coach Luis Enrique has downplayed the narrative surrounding his reunion with Kylian Mbappe, as PSG prepare to face Real Madrid in a blockbuster Club World Cup 2025 semi-final at MetLife Stadium, New York.

The Spanish tactician, who managed Mbappe during his final season at PSG, was firm in his stance when asked about their past. “All I can say is that belongs in the past, it is behind us now,” Enrique stated during the pre-match press conference.

The match marks the first time Mbappe will face his former club since his high-profile move to Real Madrid in 2024. Despite the media buzz, Enrique emphasized that the focus remains on the match itself.

“Playing against Real Madrid is always a special game. We are delighted to be here because it means we’ve done a good job up to now,” he added.

PSG’s Post-Mbappe Era: A Season of Redemption

PSG arrive in the U.S. riding high after clinching their first-ever UEFA Champions League title, a feat achieved in the very season following Mbappe’s departure. The French giants are now aiming to cap off a historic campaign with Club World Cup glory.

However, they’ll be without key defenders Willian Pacho and Lucas Hernandez, both suspended after red cards in the quarter-final win over Bayern Munich.

Despite the setbacks, Enrique remains optimistic:

“We are very close to playing another final and that is a true motivation.”

Real Madrid’s New Chapter Begins with Xabi Alonso

On the other side, Real Madrid enter the semi-final under the leadership of Xabi Alonso, who took charge earlier this season. The Spanish legend is tasked with ushering in a new era for the most decorated club in world football.

Enrique, a former Barcelona player, acknowledged the challenge:

“It’s always a pleasure to play against Real Madrid. Xabi has everything required to take on the challenge.”

Real’s preparations were slightly disrupted due to a delayed flight from Florida caused by stormy weather, but the stakes remain sky-high. The winner of this clash will face Chelsea, who defeated Fluminense 2-0 in the other semi-final.
