The football world is in mourning following the tragic deaths of Diogo Jota, 28, and his younger brother André Silva, 25, in a car accident near Zamora, Spain, early Thursday morning. According to Spanish authorities, their Lamborghini suffered a tyre blowout while overtaking, veered off the road, and caught fire, leaving no chance of rescue.
The accident occurred just 11 days after Jota’s wedding to longtime partner Rute Cardoso, with whom he shared three children.
A Career of Impact and Inspiration
Jota joined Liverpool from Wolves in 2020 for £41 million, scoring 65 goals in 182 appearances and helping the club win the FA Cup, League Cup, and Premier League title. He also earned 49 caps for Portugal, scoring 14 goals, and played his final match in the UEFA Nations League final win over Spain on June 8.
His brother André Silva was a professional footballer with FC Penafiel in Portugal’s second tier, having made 59 league appearances over the past two seasons.
