New Real Madrid head coach Xabi Alonso has issued a strong message to his attacking stars, including Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Jr, emphasizing the need for full-team defensive effort. Speaking ahead of Madrid’s final Club World Cup Group H match against RB Salzburg, Alonso made it clear that under his leadership, no player is exempt from defensive duties.

“We need and want everyone to defend — the 11 players on the pitch have to be involved defensively,” Alonso said during the pre-match press conference.

He specifically named Mbappe, Vinicius, Jude Bellingham, and Fede Valverde, stating that pressing and compactness are non-negotiable.

“They have to get close together, they have to know how we want to press. Without that, things will be very complicated,” he added.

Mbappe Still Recovering, Will Miss Salzburg Clash

Despite returning to training after a stomach bug, Kylian Mbappe will not feature in the Salzburg match. Alonso confirmed that the French forward is still regaining fitness and will be preserved for the last-16 stage.

“He’s doing well, but not enough to play tomorrow with the level that we need,” Alonso explained. “He prefers to be ready for the last 16”.

Mbappe has already scored 43 goals in his debut season at Madrid, but Alonso’s comments suggest that goal-scoring alone won’t be enough under his regime.

Rodrygo’s Role Still Vital Despite Bench Omission

Brazilian forward Rodrygo was left out of the starting lineup in Madrid’s 3-1 win over Pachuca, sparking speculation about his future. However, Alonso dismissed any concerns, calling it a tactical decision.

“Rodrygo is still an important player. He’s a special player and he will have a big role at this tournament,” Alonso said.

Madrid Eye Top Spot in Group H

Real Madrid currently sit atop Group H and will look to seal their place in the Club World Cup knockout stage with a win or draw against Salzburg. Alonso stressed that the team will play to win, regardless of potential matchups in the next round.

“It isn’t a good idea to think about not winning. That isn’t a good message for anyone,” he said
