British tennis star Emma Raducanu suffered a major blow to her Wimbledon preparations after a stunning second-round loss to 19-year-old Australian Maya Joint at the Eastbourne Open. Despite taking the first set, Raducanu fell 4-6, 6-1, 7-6 (7/4) in a match filled with momentum swings and missed opportunities.
Raducanu, ranked world number 38, had hoped for a confidence-boosting run after a year plagued by back injuries and inconsistent form. She missed the Berlin Open last week and admitted to dealing with “some really bad news” following her emotional first-round win over Ann Li.
“I feel quite tired… I need to do my best to get my head in the game ahead of next week,” Raducanu said post-match.
Maya Joint’s Breakout Week Continues
Joint, ranked world number 51, followed up her first-round upset of Ons Jabeur with another high-profile scalp. The teenager showed composure beyond her years, converting 7 of 10 break points and sealing the win with a powerful ace.
“There were a lot of ups and downs… I’m really glad I could tough it out in the end,” said Joint, who now faces Anna Blinkova in the quarter-finals.
