Gary O’Neil Wolves return talks have entered an advanced stage after Wolverhampton Wanderers dismissed Vítor Pereira on Sunday morning. The club began the process of appointing a new head coach immediately, hoping to stabilise results after a difficult start to the season.

BBC Sport revealed that O’Neil and Rob Edwards are among the top names on Wolves’ shortlist. “It is understood that O’Neil, 42, is now engaged in discussions with Wolves about a possible return, and that initial discussions have been positive.”

O’Neil’s availability gives him an advantage over Edwards, who currently manages Middlesbrough. Edwards’ release would require a significant compensation payment, creating major complications for Wolves. That situation leaves O’Neil well-placed to step back into the Molineux dugout.

Wolves Consider Mendes-Linked Candidates

Although O’Neil remains a strong candidate, Wolves continue to speak with other potential hires. Club insiders confirm that the board is also holding discussions with at least one Jorge Mendes-linked manager.

The Molineux side has a long-standing relationship with Mendes, who previously represented several of their former managers, including Nuno Espírito Santo, Bruno Lage, and Vítor Pereira. That connection has shaped many of the club’s managerial appointments in recent years.

This time, Wolves appear open to multiple directions. However, O’Neil’s familiarity with the squad and Premier League experience make him an attractive option for the hierarchy.

O’Neil Eager to Rebuild His Reputation

O’Neil lost his job in December 2024 after Wolves endured a poor run of results early in the 2024–25 Premier League season. Despite that setback, he remains eager to return to management and views Wolves as an opportunity to prove his progress as a coach.

The former West Ham United midfielder believes he can reignite a struggling team that has gone winless in ten matches. Wolves sit near the bottom of the table, and their leadership hopes a swift appointment can lift morale and spark improvement.

If O’Neil completes his return, he will face the immediate challenge of steadying a nervous dressing room and re-establishing confidence. His previous spell showed tactical flexibility and resilience, qualities Wolves urgently need as they fight to avoid relegation.
