Authorities in Nepal said that a bus carrying scores of Indian pilgrims veered off a major highway on Friday, leaving at least 14 dead, 16 injured, and several more missing.
The cause of the fatal accident
The bus took a sharp turn off the Prithvi Highway and headed into a swiftly moving river. Its roof was ripped apart, and it came to a rest on the rocky bank just short of the murky, rushing waters of the Marsyangdi.

According to Shailendra Thapa, a spokesman for the Armed Police Force, of those taken out of the bus, 14 were pronounced dead and 16 were hurt in the collision. Although officials were unable to determine the precise number of persons aboard the bus at the time of the accident or how many more people were still missing, they guessed that there were about forty people on board.
People were being pulled from the wreckage close to Abukhaireni, a town approximately 120 kilometers west of Kathmandu, by police and army rescuers.
Repetitive occurrences of landslides in Nepal
Not too far from the scene of Friday’s catastrophe, two buses were carried away by landslides in July. Only three of the sixty-five passengers on those two buses made it out alive, and only roughly half of the dead were found. Authorities have been searching, but the debris of those buses has not yet been located.
The majority of bus accidents in Nepal are caused by badly maintained cars and roads, as most of the nation is covered in mountains with winding roads.
