Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher made a thought-provoking statement following Lionel Messi’s triumph in the 2022 FIFA World Cup and Cristiano Ronaldo’s surprising move to Saudi Arabia.
Carragher expressed his sentiment that Ronaldo’s transition to Al-Nassr marked a melancholic conclusion to his illustrious career, with the esteemed footballer seemingly taking a regressive step in his professional journey with this unexpected decision.
“It’s not the best way to go out,”
At the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo both represented their respective nations. But during the event, the two encountered very different outcomes.
The Portuguese had a terrible game and was unable to save his team from losing to Morocco in the quarterfinals, while the Argentine played brilliantly in every match and motivated his team to win the championship.
To make matters worse, the 39-year-old’s contract was terminated by Manchester United after he made disparaging remarks about the club’s management and hierarchy in a contentious interview with journalist Piers Morgan before the World Cup.
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner had to settle for a move to Saudi Arabia where he joined Al-Nassr on a two-and-a-half year contract because no major club in Europe was prepared to sign him at the time.
Jamie Carragher commented on this situation saying “In some ways, it’s a sad end for him. You have two of the greatest players in Messi and Ronaldo, and Ronaldo has finished his career during an interview with Piers Morgan and Messi has won the World Cup. It’s not the best way to go out,”
Lionel Messi performed well at the World Cup
Throughout the competition, Lionel Messi turned back time and delivered electrifying performances in each match. With seven goals in just as many games, the Argentine came in second on the list of top scorers. With three assists, he also finished up with the most points.
As the player with the most appearances (26), most Man of the Match awards (11), most goal contributions, and the only player to win the Golden Ball twice, the Argentine smashed numerous records in Qatar.
For Cristiano Ronaldo, however, things were not that simple. The Portuguese was a shell of his former self, with just one goal to his credit. To top off what was really an awful performance, he was also benched for a few pivotal games.
