Norway became the first team to qualify for the UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 quarter-finals after a dramatic 2-1 win over Finland on Sunday, followed by Switzerland’s 2-0 victory over already-eliminated Iceland. With six points from two matches, Norway have clinched top spot in Group A and will face the runner-up from Group B in the last eight.
Caroline Graham Hansen was the hero in Sion, scoring the decisive goal in the 84th minute with a mishit cross that looped in off the post. The goal capped a thrilling match in which Norway dominated early but were pegged back by a resilient Finnish side.
“We need to get better at some things, but the best thing is that we will keep getting better. If you can get better while winning games, that’s the ideal formula,” said Norway coach Gemma Grainger.
Match Recap: Norway 2-1 Finland
Norway took the lead in the 17th minute when Finland’s Eva Nystrom turned Hansen’s low cross into her own net. The Norwegians nearly doubled their lead minutes later, hitting the woodwork twice in quick succession—first through Ingrid Engen’s header, then from a corner tipped onto the post by Finnish goalkeeper Anna Koivunen.
Koivunen was outstanding throughout, making key saves to deny Hansen and Ada Hegerberg. Her efforts were rewarded when Oona Sevenius equalised for Finland in the 32nd minute with a composed finish from the edge of the box.
Finland pushed for a winner in the second half, with Eveliina Summanen denied by a fingertip save from Cecilie Fiskerstrand. But it was Hansen who had the final say, dancing past four defenders before scoring the winner.
Switzerland Keep Hopes Alive with Win Over Iceland
In the group’s other match, hosts Switzerland delighted the home crowd at Wankdorf Stadium with a 2-0 win over Iceland.
Geraldine Reuteler broke the deadlock in the 76th minute with a composed finish after a slick passing move. Alayah Pilgrim sealed the win in stoppage time with a deflected strike from outside the box.
The result puts Switzerland second in Group A, level on points with Finland but ahead on goal difference. They now need just a draw against Finland on Thursday to reach the quarter-finals.
