Liam Delap, one of the most sought-after strikers this summer, has officially joined Chelsea in a £30 million move from Ipswich Town. Despite interest from Manchester United, Everton, Newcastle, and a buy-back clause from Manchester City, Delap chose Stamford Bridge—and now he’s revealed why.
Why Chelsea?
Delap cited the club’s vision, Champions League football, and a reunion with familiar faces as key reasons. He consulted Cole Palmer, his former Manchester City teammate, before making the decision. > “You’ve just got to go with your gut and hope it works out,” Delap said.
He also highlighted his strong relationship with manager Enzo Maresca, under whom he thrived at City’s U21s, scoring 20 goals and winning PL2 Player of the Season.
The Number Nine Shirt & Club vs Country Dilemma
Delap embraced Chelsea’s “cursed” No. 9 shirt, brushing off superstition. He also chose to play in the Club World Cup over the U21 Euros, prioritizing integration with his new team.
Looking Ahead
With Nicolas Jackson suspended, Delap could feature against ES Tunis and potentially face Bayern Munich or PSG in the knockout stages
