On Wednesday, August 28, the much awaited Tim Burton sequel to 1988’s Beetlejuice made its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival, with a number of its actors in attendance. Along with stars Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, Jenna Ortega, Catherine O’Hara, Willem Dafoe, Monica Bellucci, and Justin Theroux, filmmaker Burton, 66, was present. “One of my favorite parts was getting to stare into your eyes” was a joke that Ryder, 52, made to Keaton, 72, during a press conference held in conjunction with the film’s premiere.
Winona talks about her ‘dream come true’ project
Designing the follow-up as “a dream come true” “My love and trust for Tim runs so deep, and there’s a sense of playfulness where you can try things and you know that if it’s bad, he won’t use it,” the Stranger Things actress remarked, 36 years after the film’s premiere.
“You feel so safe in that sense, but you also feel just completely free,” Ryder stated. And it was extremely nice to be surrounded by that enthusiasm once more. It reminded me a lot of the first [movie]. I feel incredibly fortunate to work with such a diverse group of individuals. It was among my life’s more memorable moments.”
The much awaited sequel
The Beetlejuice A number of the cast members from the first movie return for Beetlejuice, including Keaton as the title character, the prankish poltergeist, Ryder as an adult Lydia Deetz, and O’Hara, seventy-nine, as Lydia’s stepmother Delia Deetz. Theroux, 53, Bellucci, 59, Dafoe, 69, and Ortega, 21, who plays Lydia’s adolescent daughter Astrid Deetz, are among the new cast members who join them.
When the first complete trailer debuted in May, Lydia was shown cautioning Astrid not to mention the moniker Beetlejuice. “A trickster devil tormented our whole family when I was a teenager and attempted to compel me into marriage. Never mention that name,” she said. A storyline twist was unveiled in July’s second trailer, which showed Lydia pleading with Beetlejuice to rescue her daughter from the Afterlife.
More than 35 years after the first film, Keaton told Empire magazine it was “surreal” to return his ghost-with-the-most persona. Regarding his strategy this time, he continued, “I had to go back to the beginning because there has been so much marketing of [Beetlejuice].” I had to ask myself, “What was I even thinking about when I was developing my unusual imagination?” Rather than seeing a golf club cover or coffee mug [emblazoned with the character].” Regarding Keaton’s faultless performance in the follow-up, Burton told the source, “It was like he was possessed by a demon because he just went right back into it.”
The U.S. theaters open for Beetlejuice on September 6, and the Venice Film Festival is scheduled to run from August 28 to September 7.
