Steven Spielberg, the visionary behind Jaws, E.T., and Jurassic Park, has voiced strong opposition to using artificial intelligence in front of the camera. Despite directing the 2001 film A.I. Artificial Intelligence, Spielberg now says he’s wary of AI’s growing role in creative decision-making.

“I don’t want AI making any creative decisions that I can’t make myself,” he told Reuters during a ceremony at Universal Studios, where a theater was named in his honor.

He emphasized that while AI may be useful for tasks like budgeting or planning, it should not replace human storytelling or artistic intuition.

A.I. Was About Humanity, Not Technology

Spielberg clarified that his film A.I. was less about technology and more about sentient existence and emotional connection. “It wasn’t really where AI is taking us today,” he said. “Eventually, there will be a convergence between AI and robotics”.

The film, which predated ChatGPT by over two decades, explored whether a robot child could be truly loved—posing questions that remain relevant in today’s AI discourse.

Technology’s Impact on Creative Jobs

Spielberg recalled how CGI in Jurassic Park replaced stop-motion animation, affecting careers like that of Phil Tippett. “That kind of made certain careers somewhat extinct,” he admitted. “So, I’m very sensitive to things that AI may do to take work away from people”.

He remains open to revisiting his stance in the future but, for now, draws a “line in the sand” when it comes to AI’s role in filmmaking.
