Pop and country sensation Miley Cyrus faces allegations of copying Bruno Mars’ 2012 song “When I Was Your Man” for her Grammy-winning hit “Flowers.” Tempo Music Investments has filed a lawsuit against her, asserting that the two songs share “numerous musical similarities.”
Even The Lyrics Were Intentional
The investment platform, which claims to hold a stake in the copyright of the 2012 track, alleges that the harmony, chorus, melody, chord progressions, and even the lyrics of Miley Cyrus’ song were “intentionally” borrowed from Bruno Mars’ song.
Bruno Mars is not a plaintiff in the copyright infringement case.
Miley won Record of the Year for her song, “Flowers” and marked her first Grammy award, earlier this year. Moreover, she also received a Grammy for Best Pop Solo Performance.
“This award is amazing, but I really hope that it doesn’t change anything, because my life was beautiful yesterday,” Cyrus said in a speech. “Not everyone in the world will get a Grammy, but everyone in this world is spectacular, so please don’t think that this is important,” reported Wion.
Considered a pop icon, Miley Cyrus has been acknowledged for her evolving artistry and style, earning the title of “Teen Queen” in the 2000s. She is also noted as one of the rare child stars who has successfully transitioned to a flourishing musical career in adulthood.
“I’ve Been Doing This For 20 Years”
In June, Miley Cyrus expressed in an interview with W Magazine her frustration with the Recording Academy for delaying recognition of her contributions to the pop music industry.
“No shade, but I’ve been doing this for 20 years, and this is my first time actually being taken seriously at the Grammys?” she stated.
“I’ve had a hard time figuring out what the measurement is there, because if we want to talk stats and numbers, then where the f–k was I? And if you want to talk, like, impact on culture, then where the f–k was I?”
