British TV personality Denise Welch, mother of The 1975 frontman Matty Healy, made headlines after her appearance on Watch What Happens Live on July 24. When asked about Taylor Swift’s album The Tortured Poets Department—widely believed to be inspired by her son—Welch didn’t hold back.
“Not being her mother-in-law is a role that I’m glad that I lost,” she said, prompting gasps from the audience.
While Welch clarified she has “nothing against” Swift personally, she described the situation as “tricky,” hinting at the imbalance between Swift’s ability to share her side through music and the scrutiny faced by others involved.
Healy and Swift’s Complicated History
Healy and Swift were romantically linked in 2023, though their relationship was never officially confirmed. Their connection dates back to 2014, when Swift attended several The 1975 concerts and the two reportedly exchanged numbers.
In a 2016 interview, Healy controversially said it would be “emasculating” to date someone more famous than him, referencing Swift. He later walked back the comments, calling her “gracious, hard-working, creatively gifted, and beautiful”.

Moving On: New Chapters for Both Stars
Welch emphasized that Healy has taken the aftermath of Swift’s album “in good grace” and is now happily engaged to model Gabriella Bechtel, also known as Gabriette.
“He’s very happy with his amazing fiancée… so we’ve moved on,” Welch concluded.
Meanwhile, Swift is in a high-profile relationship with NFL star Travis Kelce, which began in summer 2023.
