American gymnast Jordan Chiles has submitted an appeal to the Federal Supreme Court of Switzerland after being denied the bronze medal in the women’s floor event at the 2024 Olympics.
Chiles Originally Placed Fifth
This marks the latest appeal from 23-year-old Chiles, following two previous rejections by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
Romania’s Ana Barbosu was awarded the bronze medal by the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) after a ruling from the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
Chiles originally placed fifth, but after an inquiry regarding the difficulty rating of her routine, officials upgraded her score, moving her into third place.
However, Barbosu and her team appealed to CAS, arguing that the inquiry had been filed four seconds past the one-minute deadline set by FIG. CAS is generally considered the highest authority on legal matters in sports.
CAS Failed To Review Video
US media reports suggested that the head of the CAS panel involved in the decision had connections to Romania, prompting CAS to condemn these claims as “outrageous statements” of bias. Chiles’ lawyers contend that CAS failed to review video footage that they believe “unequivocally proves” the inquiry was submitted within the allowed timeframe.
Last month, Chiles revealed that she faced online racist abuse following the decision to strip her of the bronze medal. Despite this setback, Chiles won gold in the team event at the Paris Olympics, as part of the US team that included Simone Biles.
Last week, Chiles said,“The biggest thing that was taken from me was, it was the recognition of who I was. Not just my sport, but the person I am.”
“I followed the rules. My coach followed the rules. We did everything that was totally, completely right,” she added.
